Win 2 tickets to Adam Sherkin’s Exquisite Departure

John Adams, a well known composer of the minimalist tradition, is in town this week as the featured composer of Toronto Symphony Orchestra’s New Music Festival from March 1-7. Minimalist music is hypnotic, atmospheric and spine-tinging in the hands of a reflective and sensitive composer-pianist like Adam Sherkin. While the music is often heard in motion pictures and games, hearing it live in concert can be a meditative and transformative experience.

In the second concert of Adam Sherkin’s concert series at the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts, the music is all about unforseen journeys and the melancholy of saying goodbye. Read more about this ticket contest.

Win 2 tickets to Adam Sherkin’s Britten’s America

“I think this recital — the first in Adam Sherkin’s solo series at the St Lawrence Centre — should be called ‘It Takes a Pianist-Composer to Know a Pianist-Composer’.” — John Terauds, Musical Toronto

Benjamin Britten is a well-known English composer of classical music, particularly his orchestral and operatic works. During his residency in New York, he met Canadian composer Colin McPhee, who had just returned from a seven-year stay in Bali, resulted in the a recording of two-piano transcriptions of Balinese music performed by Britten and McPhee.

In Adam Sherkin’s first concert of his series at the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts, we will hear the story of these two composers through music and conversation, capped by works by Aaron Copland, and Sherkin’s own compositions.

For your chance to win tickets to hear Sherkin’s performance, and for this unusual and thoughtful musical program, share or retweet our contest details on facebook and twitter before Thursday November 14, 2013 at 5pm.

Collaboration across genres isn’t easy, but there are brave and intrepid artists like Ron Davis who embark on such artistic projects. A renowned Canadian jazz artist, Ron has created an album in Symphronica in which his multiple influences from classical, world and pop music can be heard loud and clear for the first time. In his own words:

It is one of the most important milestones in my career. It brings together my love of jazz, classical, world and general pop music, while allowing me to collaborate with some of the most incredible musicians living in Canada today.
