BeMused Network exists to help independent and emerging artists stay ahead of the curve, and we have been listening to your needs.

Starting up your independent (is there any other?) performing arts career can be incredibly rewarding, but the journey is full of challenges.

A whole host of decisions must be made at every step. Most of these will be business rather than artistic ones. Each business decision — from hiring a publicist to planning your finances to filing tax documents to distributing your work online — comes with a learning curve. It also comes with a price paid in an artist’s most valuable assets: their energy and time.

As it turns out, there are professionals and domain experts who are passionate about sharing what they know in order to empower artists. We have worked with them to develop workshops that will address the knowledge gap and facilitate actionable change.

Workshop #1: Legal Fundamentals (Kalogiannides Law) – July 30, 2014 @ 4-6pmKalogiannides_Law_Logo
Location: University of Toronto, Faculty of Information, 140 St. George Street
There are many legal tools that performing artists and creative types have at their disposal, but too often we only recognize their importance when a dispute arises. Andreas Kalogiannides will point you to the simple things you can do today to avoid common pitfalls in the future, and touch on common situations such as contract negotiations and protecting and monetizing your intellectual property.

Location: NetGain Partners, 53 Berkeley Street
There are many hard choices awaiting a growing organization, by which we mean “happy dilemmas,” for leaders who are strong students of their audience, product and market, and who become intrepid decision-makers. The most successful and unique artistic organizations once started small and without exact precedent. Join Genevieve Tran for the assurance that business literacy is highly doable, if not easy.

Workshop #3: Leveraging your Network (BeMused Network) – August 13, 2014 @ 4-6pm
Location: University of Toronto, Faculty of Information, 140 St. George Street
Networks have existed for years, but social media has brought them into the public consciousness, along with a whole slew of misconceptions and underutilized potential. In this workshop we will analyze the nodes and ties in your online and offline networks, then help you assess the way you currently maintain and cultivate those connections. Networks are there to help you, not monopolize your time and attention. Margaret Lam will show you how you can use them to your advantage.
